At first, the service did not take off well enough but then they introduced additional functions to attract new customers like enabling users to mute other friends, add or remove contacts and share their location with others. Because of these features, it went viral very fast and soon became hugely successful. In September 2002, the site made its debut on MSN, Yahoo!, and AOL. They were joined later by AOL and Hotmail and finally changed their name to ‘WhatsApp’.

In 2003, the name was changed to ‘WhatsApp’ to reflect what the app was designed to do. After some minor changes within the application itself, it became more and more popular. As the number of people using its software increased, the need to improve the design to accommodate all users became urgent. In 2004, the App Store was created for the App store which allowed users to download apps of their choice which were already pre-installed on their phones. On July 17th, 2016, it surpassed Twitter on both users and followers using the site's algorithm, indicating how significant its value has become.

In August 2017, during an attempt to improve engagement rates, the majority of interactions between two users were deleted. Users were warned about the changes before the official announcement on the 8th of August 2018. From May to April 2019, the frequency of updates dropped, resulting in users abandoning the site. While trying to understand why the site was going down, a developer posted on Reddit saying, "We don't know if we can fix our servers right now to prevent the issue from happening." To try and keep themselves busy, the developers worked on improving their mobile features, which saw the site become less laggy while allowing users to reply to incoming text messages. The response to this was highly positive as more users responded to replies sent to them. Furthermore, on 9th June 2020 the site reached 10 million registered users globally and on November 29th, 2021, it exceeded 100 million registered users as it crossed 300 million users worldwide.
